The Visual Culture at the Top of the World program opens up a window of cultural perspectives onto the far reaches of the North. During the spring of 2012, students explored through images the visual culture of Finland and Sweden and learned about art teaching practices in these locations. At the conclusion of spring term, the classroom moved northward to Finland.
Students explored the unique atmosphere of Helsinki and its endless summer nights. Ohio State students interacted with artists, students, researchers, and teachers who deal with issues of ecological, social, and cultural sustainability. Students also visited museums and cultural centers. After exploring Helsinki, Ohio State students traveled to Stockholm where they investigated sites of visual culture and learning, such as schools, museums, markets, shops, parks, and tourist sites in this urban center.
