The Bachelor of Art Education (BAE) with Licensure is an undergraduate degree designed for students who intend to become art educators in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade (P-12) schools. All graduates receive the Bachelor of Art Education degree. While students interested in art education outside of P-12 may apply to the BAE program, the department gives preference to students’ intent on teaching in schools. Students interested in the Multi-Age, P-12 Four Year Resident Educator License in the Area of Visual Arts for the State of Ohio typically apply to the program in the spring of their sophomore year after completing ARTEDUC 2250: Introduction to Art Education, BFA foundation courses, art history, and some studio courses. Entrance into the BAE program through the Department of AAEP is competitive. Students start the Art Education Core program in the autumn semester of their junior year.

Students who are interested in starting at a community college and then transferring into OSU’s Columbus campus can use the Pathways program at Columbus State Community College. Student Teaching Placements in Art Education
Art Education students are required to complete two 7-week teaching practicum experiences during which students are expected to assume all responsibilities of the cooperating teacher. As tied to the rigor of our practicum program on their first attempt, 100% of our class of 2015 Bachelor in Art Education graduates passed the new State of Ohio Teaching Performance Assessment to earn P-12 Four Year Resident Educator Teaching Licenses. Students have completed placements in the following sites, which are diverse in their student populations, programming, and community resources.

Bachelor of Art Education Informal Option
The BAE Informal option is an undergraduate degree designed for students who seek art education careers outside of public school settings. The BAE Informal option is a four-year degree, which allows students to develop a strong understanding of educational theory and practice and then apply those skills in museums, community arts or other non-traditional art education spaces. Instead of completing a student teaching practicum, BAE Informal Option students finish with an internship experience in a museum, community-based arts, or other non-traditional setting. Students typically begin in fine arts or other art-related fields and apply to our program through an online portfolio review.
