Graduate Teaching Associateships

The most common form of financial assistance for our graduate students is a graduate teaching associate appointment within the department. These GTA appointments are highly sought after and competed for.

Applications for GTA appointments cannot be considered before admission to the graduate program.

In general, the department considers two issues when making GTA appointments. One is academic promise as a student, which is judged on the basis of the materials submitted for admission to the program. The other is appropriate background and skills for the duties required by the particular assignment, whether research, teaching or service. For example, the supervision of student teachers requires significant experience as a practicing teacher and teaching undergraduate classes requires a good command of the English language.

Funding eligibility
Master's students - two years
Doctoral students - three years
Master's to PhD - those who received funding at the Master’s level and continue as doctoral students may receive funding for a total of five years.

Funding reappointments are made depending upon availability of funds, satisfactory performance, and successful academic progress. Summer term appointments are arranged separately. There are no guarantees of appointment beyond that specified in the student’s initial appointment documents.

Spoken English Requirement. Graduate Teaching Associates whose native language is not English must pass a spoken English test before teaching at Ohio State. Students should schedule this examination as soon as possible after arriving on campus. For more information see Spoken English Program.

1. Full tuition waiver (i.e. instructional, general, and learning technology fees). 
2. Monthly stipend for 9 months

The following fees are not covered by the tuition waiver and will be deducted from the monthly stipend: Student Activity Fee, Student Union Fee, COTA Bus Fee, Recreation Fee, Student Health Insurance (if applicable).  Health insurance is partially subsidized by the Graduate School. New GTAs are required to take the department's TA development course, ARTEDUC 7300 Introduction to Teaching Arts Education at the College Level, which is offered as a 2 credit hour class during autumn semester, and attend UCAT's Teacher Orientation in the summer. Unless otherwise directed, all GTAs are required to assist a faculty member or perform service for the department for 5 hours a week.

Position Descriptions

Art Education 1600 Art and Music Since 1945 - GTA 50% Appointment
A survey of the visual arts and music in the western world since 1945, based on live and recorded performances and exhibitions.
Course Supervisor: Clayton Funk

In-class TA

GTAs for Art Ed 1600 (in-class) must attend all lecture classes, attend meetings with the course supervisor, hold regular office hours, meet with students, read and assess student writing, calculate and report grades, track participation and attendance, monitor and participate in online and in-class activities, and address student concerns as needed.  TAs may be asked to prepare and deliver 1-2 lectures per semester. 

On-line TA

GTAs for Art Ed 1600 (on-line) must teach one section of approx. 50 students per semester, attend meetings with the course supervisor, hold regular office hours, read and assess student writing, calculate and report grades, track participation and attendance, monitor and participate in online activities, and address student concerns as needed. 

  Art Education 2520 Digital Artmaking - GTA 50% Appointment
Introductory study of digital artmaking through interpreting contemporary artists, constructing a language of art critique, and producing images using graphic design software.
Course Supervisor: Karen Hutzel

Experience with Photoshop is preferred.  TAs must follow the prescribed course description, general syllabus, syllabus calendar, course objectives, text and project assignments. Additional material,
assignments, readings and resources can be added. TAs must attend meetings with the course supervisor, hold regular office hours, assess student assignments, calculate and report grades, track participation and attendance, and address student concerns as needed.  TAs must provide the course supervisor with mid-semester student evaluations.

2nd Level Writing Courses - GTA 50% Appointment
Art Education 2367.01 Visual Culture: Investigating Diversity & Social Justice

A study of the artists, the artworks, and art worlds from diverse ethnic cultures in North America.
Course Supervisor: Christine Ballengee Morris

Art Education 2367.02 Writing Art Criticism
Focuses on critical literacy and writing about contemporary American art by a variety of artists with diverse points of view.
Course Supervisor: Candace Stout

Art Education 2367.03 Criticizing Television
A critical analysis of a wide variety of television programs through viewing, discussing, reading, and writing.
Course Supervisor: Shari Savage

TAs must follow the prescribed course description, general syllabus, syllabus calendar, course objectives, text and project assignments. TAs are required to attend meetings with the course supervisor, hold regular office hours, read and assess student writing, calculate and report grades, track participation and attendance, and address student concerns as needed.   TAs must submit mid-semester evaluations to their course supervisor.

Art Education 3900 Art and Curriculum Concepts for Teachers - GTA 50% Appointment
Problems of teaching in terms of personal knowledge about art, insight into children's art work, and understanding of elementary school curriculum.
Course supervisor: Deborah Smith-Shank

For this position TAs need three years of K-12, preferably elementary school teaching experience in the U.S. TAs must follow the prescribed course description and course objectives, attend meetings with the course supervisor, hold regular office hours, assess student assignments, calculate and report grades, track participation and attendance, and address student concerns as needed.  TAs must provide mid-semester evaluations. It is advisable that TAs take a curriculum or integrated curriculum course in the department and a multicultural course.
