AAEP Courses
AAEP offers a wide array of courses including offerings in general education, visual culture, preparatory coursework in the theory and practice of art education, in-depth studies in arts and cultural institutions, leadership strategies, and management practices as well as courses in museum education and administration.
We house two of the largest GE courses in the College of Arts and Sciences: ARTEDUC 1600: Art & Music Since 1945 and ARTEDUC 2700: Understanding Television, which are offered year round. Many of our 5000-level courses are offered on a biennial basis, so it is recommended to take these courses the semester they are offered.

ARTEDUC 2600: Visual Culture: Representation and Society
A study of social and cultural issues through the exploration of visual culture. By developing practical methods of interpreting and researching visual artistic production and reception, this course provides critical tools for engaging with how diverse forms of visual culture both challenge stereotypes and biases and also celebrate the racial, ethnic and gender diversity of US democratic society. 3 credits.

ARTEDUC 5795: Seminar on Topical Issues in Art Education (Cultural Heritage)
Cultural Heritage Management offers a cross-cultural and international perspective on recent debates within the field of cultural heritage. By expanding students’ knowledge on cultural heritage in countries throughout the U.S., Europe, South America, Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, it seeks to build a foundational knowledge on cultural heritage management. This is a series of 6 credits to supplement students' coursework in the Online MA in Art Education program. ARTEDUC 7795: Seminar on Topical Issues in Art Education (Facilitating Brave Space: Arts-Based Leadership, Self-Reflection, and Critical Practice)
Grounded in experiential learning, arts-based inquiry, systems intelligence, and multicultural critical reflective practice, this course prepares graduate students to facilitate meaningful dialogue about identity, power, values, and workplace culture. Students will develop practical leadership and facilitation skills that support courageous conversations across diverse professional and community settings.
Through arts-based reflection and structured learning cycles of experience, reflection, analysis, and action, students will explore how personal narratives, leadership behaviors, and decision-making patterns influence relationships within organizations and communities. The course emphasizes critical thinking, self-awareness, and the ability to navigate complex social dynamics where multiple perspectives and lived experiences intersect.
Students will learn to use art and reflective dialogue as tools for examining assumptions, expanding interpretation, and strengthening emotional intelligence in leadership contexts. Opportunities throughout the semester will allow students to practice facilitation skills and apply course frameworks in collaborative and community-engaged settings within the Columbus area.
By the end of the semester, students will have developed the confidence and capacity to guide reflective dialogue, foster inclusive leadership practices, and translate critical insights into thoughtful, systems-aware action. 3 credits.
