Student spotlight: Kathleen Goodyear to present at Ohio State's Academy of Teaching Conference

PhD Candidate Kathleen Goodyear

On Thursday, May 4, AAEP PhD candidate Kathleen Goodyear will speak at the Ohio State Academy of Teaching Annual Conference on Excellence in Teaching & Learning. The all-day conference will include a keynote speaker, breakout sessions, and a poster session/reception.

At Kathleen’s session, “Promoting Understanding of Self and Others Through Arts Activities,” she will discuss various ways in which visual artmaking, narrative and creative writing, theatre/improv, video, music, and movement activities can be used with undergraduates to facilitate their exploration of their evolving personal and cultural identities. Arts activities can foster students’ increased empathy for and understanding of both themselves and others, particularly people with differing cultural backgrounds and life experiences. These activities can be used within courses, in high-impact practices such as OSU’s STEP, service learning, study abroad programs, student life programs in residence halls, and career, multicultural, and wellness centers. Kathleen will provide examples of students’ work and feedback from her in-class dissertation research and attendees will participate in a short activity.

Registration for the conference is free and includes lunch. For more information and to register, visit the Academy of Teaching Annual Conference website
